Most AI startup headlines are about funding rounds. This post covers three AI products whose founders say they grew to seven- or eight-figure yearly revenue without that playbook. All figures below are self-reported by the founders in interviews. We have not seen audited financials. Each number links to its source and date.

Definitions. ARR (annual recurring revenue) is recurring subscription revenue on a yearly basis. "$7M per year" is the founder's own wording. Team size is what the founder said at the time of the interview.

1. Chatbase: a narrow job, built in six weeks

According to Solo Founders, Yasser Elsaid saw that large language models couldn't use your own data. This was before ChatGPT launched. He dropped out of university in Canada and built the first version of Chatbase in about six weeks. His first Stripe payment came 30 minutes after he put up a pricing page.

The same piece reports $9 million ARR, a 30-person team in Toronto and zero outside investors. It also says Chatbase added a sales team only at around $7–8M ARR. Read our Chatbase case study.

2. Wave AI: one founder, AI as the team

Josh Mohrer was New York General Manager at Uber. On Mixergy he describes Wave AI as an AI note-taking app that records, transcribes and summarizes conversations. He says he vibe coded it into a $7 million a year company even though he is not a developer. The interview calls it a highly profitable one-person SaaS business. He names Cursor as the "home base" for his code. See the Wave AI case study.

3. Arcads: AI UGC ads that grew fast

In a Latka interview, co-founder Romain Torres reports that Arcads reached $10M ARR in about 20 months after it was founded in January 2024. He also reports 6,000+ customers, a team of 8, and 20%+ monthly growth. The business was bootstrapped and he says it has been profitable throughout. Early revenue was about $5,000 a month. What the three have in common

  • One clear job. They answer questions from your own data, take meeting notes, or make ad videos.
  • Shipped quickly. Chatbase charged its first customer within weeks of starting.
  • Small teams for their revenue. They had 1, 8 and 30 people at the time of each interview.
  • Revenue before funding. Chatbase and Arcads both report no outside investors.
